| NC led coalition misleading farmers on account of exemption: BJP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Apr 5: "State government has misled the poor farmers by announcing exemption of tax on Agricultural equipments in the recent budget presented by Finance Minister" alleged BJP MLA Ch. Sukhnandan. Addressing media persons along with Kissan Morcha State President Karan Singh, he said that the Agricultural equipments were already exempted from toll tax and declaring them toll tax free in the recent budget is one more attempt to mislead the farmers who have been suffering due to anti-farmer policies of the present NC-Congress coalition government in the state. Sukhnandan said that the coalition government has also misled the farmers by announcing three months ration of 50 kg per family, while in practice it issued only 35 kg of ration. Not only this, the government has also failed to keep its promise of issuance of pass books among the farmers. These claims have turned out to be hollow. The present rabi crop has also been badly hit by drought and the government should declare whole of Jammu region as drought hit and provide adequate financial aid for complete six months so that the farmers are in a position to arrange meals for the family and fodder for the cattle. On the issue of providing subsidy to the farmers while purchasing tractors, Sukhnandan said this subsidy should directly be given to the farmer and not the Agro Industry Department as its benefits do not reach the farmers. The price of tractor in showroom is less than what the Agro Industry Department charges. He also said that the increase in VAT on tractors from 4 per cent to 5 per cent is also not justified and needs to be withdrawn. He expressed concern over adoption of different yardstick for supply of fertilizers in different district of the state. While in other districts the department makes available fertilizers at nearest depots, in Jammu the farmers have to travel long and spent extra money to purchase fertilizer because the department do not issue FOR for the same for Jammu district. Sukhnandan said that the constitution of so-called of Kissan Welfare Board is a step towards adjusting near and dear ones by giving status of MoS at the exchequer of the state. It has proved to be of no use to any of the farmer as the government has not even identified its functions and powers. He also took the government to task for not implementing the crops insurance scheme as a result of which the poor farmers are made to suffer. He expressed surprise over the tall claims of desilting of Ranbir Canal by spending crores of rupees but without any output. He said the repeated operations of the desilting has only caused huge losses of money as no concrete and long losting work has been done in the previous years. Demanding tourist village status to Jhiri, where lakhs of devotees visit every year to pay their obeisance at the place where a farmer Baba Jitto sacrificed his life while fighting for the rights of the farmers.
