Jam't-e-Islami aghast over Geelani's biography
Amir orders boycott of Hurriyat G meetings; Geelani warns against expulsion

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 5: Syed Ali Geelani's biography Quaid-e-Inqilaab: Eak Tehreekh Eak Tareekh (Leader of revolution: A movement, A history) by Dr Shafi Shariti has created a storm in his faction of Hurriyat Conference. An important constituent, Jama't-e-Islami has decided to boycott future meetings of the separatist conglomerate. Geelani has issued a subtle warning against his expulsion
According to Jama't-e-Islami spokesman, Advocate Zahid Ali, an extra ordinary meeting of the organization was held at its headquarters Monday with the Amir-e-Jama't in chair. The meeting held that the book written by an `unknown' author had tried to tarnish the image of Jama't-e-Islami.
Zahid said the author has tried to project Jama't has been equated with pro-Indian politicians who are fed by Indian intelligence agencies. "This is intolerable. The book has blown a particular person out of proportion. However, the organization that groomed that person has been ridiculed and condemned", he said.
The meeting, Zahid said, strongly condemned `criminal and shameful silence' of Geelani. "He should have set the records rights", he said. The Jama't has called the meeting of Shoura Tuesday to discuss the development. The meeting is expected to take a decision on Geelani's Jam't membership.
Takings strong exception to the book, the Amir, Sheikh Muhammad Hasan has directed the Jama't-e-Islami workers to refrain from attending programmes of Syed Ali Geelani. He has also decided to boycott Hurriyat (G) meetings for the time being.
Talking to a local news agency, Syed Ali Shah Geelani said averments made in the book are author's own. "I have nothing to do with it", he said. When asked about his response incase he was expelled from Jama't, he said: "If Jama't throws me out from the door, I will enter it from the window", he said.
Geelani, however, issued a subtle warning. "I have formed Tehreekh-e-Hurriyat by virtue of an agreement reached between me and Jama't on August 1 2004. I have already been relieved of my Shoura membership. This is a violation of the agreement. Incase my membership is cancelled, it will be a serious breach of the above August agreement", he warned.
This is not the first time when Geelani and Jama't -e-Islami have found each other on different sides of the fence. Geelani led a revolt against Jama't leadership when Ghulam Muhammad Bhat was its Amir. Geelani accused Bhat of dancing to the tune of Investigating Bureau. He also took Bhat to task for burying literature produced by the Institute of Kashmir Studies (IKS) which was an extension of Jama't.
It may be recalled the IKS was established in 1990 and it published as many as forty books on human rights. The literature produced for several years was dumped into the foundation of a building at Nowgam, Srinagar on Bhat's directions. Geelani took serious note of what he called `Jama't-e-Islami's U turn'. He even called Bhat a traitor. In retaliation Bhat expelled Geelani from Jama't membership.
Geelani lost his cool again when Jama't led by Bhat divorced Hizbul Mujahideen. It was during Bhat's regime that Jama't dared to say it had no connections with Hizbul Mujahideen.
