| Gho Manasan PHC sans basic amenities | | | Early Times Report JAMMU: Home to a former minister and three MLAs, primary health centre (PHC) at Gho Manasan near here sans requisite strength of medicos and para-medicos. Housed in two-rooms, it also does not have requisite space for the staff to sit. During emergency, patients are rushed to the Government Medical College and SMGS hospitals, besides private nursing homes. Locals also alleged that whenever they visited the PHC for the treatment of minor ailments, they were never provided medicines. The PHC was in a pitiable condition, which contradicted the oft-repeated statements of health minister Sham Lal Sharma that better medicare facilities would be provided to even the remotest corners of the state. Locals said they had several times approached ex-minister and Congress leader Mula Ram and former MLAs Faqir Nath and Sat Pal Lakhotra, besides MLA, Choudhary Sukhnandan, to take steps for improving the condition of the PHC, but nothing had been done in this regard as yet. Arun Lal, a local, said the PHC lacked basic amenities and was closed after 5 pm. It had only one doctor, he added. Village elder Daulat Ram said as the PHC did not have a gynaecologist, pregnant women were either being taken to private hospitals and nursing homes or the SMGS hospital for treatment. The post of Ayurvedic doctor was also vacant, he added. No dental check up was being done in the PHC as the dentist posted there had his chair in the sub-centre, about 3 km from the PHC, Daulat said. Denying the allegations, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Shahid Mughal, however, said the PHC had two doctors. This PHC did not fall in the category of the PHCs that remained open 24 hours a day, he informed. Locals, however, asked the government to provide basics and fulfill the needs of the people, if not the "wants."
