The Ministry has finalised a Rs 54 crore project for providing home lighting system in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said that in order to save hydel energy, the Ministry has agreed to help the state in providing solar lighting systems for the Raj Bhawans and Legislative complexes in Srinagar and Jammu. In addition to this, the Ministry will help the state in providing the system to important shrines of Mata Vaishnov Devi, Dargah Hazratbal and Chrar-i-Sharief in Budgam. According to the Government sources to begin with 72 health instit utions were to be covered under the solar lighting system during the year 2010-11. The Union Ministry has decided to provide Rs 45 crores for setting up 56 micro hydel projects in the state. This decision has been taken after the Government realised that setting up major and medium hydel projects was time consuming and required large amount of money. Invariably whenver the Government finalised a blueprint for a major hydel projects it would receive objections from Pakistan on the plea that the project violated the Indus Water Treaty. Therefore it has been decided to seek additional financial help from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for setting up micro hydel projects and for providing additional solar lighting systems in remote villages.
