Cricket: Mathematics, Urdu Deptts enter QFs

JAMMU, Apr 8: Department of Urdu and Department of Mathematics today sailed into the quarterfinals of the ongoing Inter-Department Cricket Tournament of University of Jammu on the campus here.
In the pre-quarterfinals, Urdu registered a 53 runs victory over Department of Geology. Earlier, batting first, after winning the toss, Urdu Department set a target of 178 runs losing all their wickets in 19.2 overs of the 20 overs game. In reply, Geology could not chase and bowled out for 124 runs in 18.3 overs.
Arshad played superb innings of 61 (off 24 balls, 3x6, 8x4) while Javed and Mozam Khan contributed 54 (off 43 balls, 5x4) and 13 runs respectively. From Geology, Stanzin was most successful bowler with three wickets giving away only eight runs in two overs he bowled. Arun and Arjun also did a fine job taking away three and two wickets respectively.
Later, chasing a run-rate of near eight-run per over, Geology Department could not maintain the required rate and in the process lost all their wickets for 124 runs in 18.3 overs.
Arjun was top scorer with 24 runs while Rajan, Anish and Ankush contributed 16, 17, and 14 runs respectively. Mozam Khan and Vakeel bagged three wickets each from Urdu Department while Ajaz Shah clinched to and Imran one. In another pre-quarterfinal match, played today, Department of Mathematics registered win over Department of Punjabi beating latter convincingly by nine wickets.
After winning the toss and decided to bat first, Punjabi lost all their wickets for 72 runs in 17 overs. Paramjeet Singh remained top scorer with 14 runs while Parmeet Singh and Mohit Slathia added 13 and 10 runs respectively. From Mathematics, Varinder and Digvijay shared three wickets each. Rohit Singh Pawar bagged two.
Batting second, Mathematics Department overhauled the total in mere 6.3 overs losing the only wicket of Rohit, who contributed 20-ball 26 runs. Shahjahan also played well and remained unbeaten at 22 (off 13 balls, 5x4) runs. From Punjabi Department, Harbhajan Singh claimed the only wicket lost by Mathematics Department. Today's matches were officiated by Raman Kumar, Vijay Dogra, Pankaj Sasun and Udeep Raina. Sat Pal was scorer.
