| Mufti calls for release of political prisoners | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Apr 8: Stressing immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said government was trying to enforce peace of the graveyard in the state. In a statement issued here today, he said the government was unabashedly indulging in rights violations of worst kind by curbing personal liberties of those holding different opinion. This he said was against the ethos of democracy and hit at the very fundamentals of the premise that all problems would be resolved politically.Mufti said it was perturbing that the government had resorted to the draconian PSA to stifle the voices of dissent. It is alarming that the government is brazenly violating even the orders of higher judiciary to hide its inability to sort out issues politically. He said leaders like Shabir Ahmed Shah, Ashraf Sehrayee, Ghulam Nabi Sumjhi, Nayeem Ahmed Khan and General Musa were imprisoned in distant jails even though the courts had struck down their detention. Some of these leaders had developed ailments as a result of long incarcerations but the government had unfolded its worst face in dealing with them. Reiterating his view that a level playing field should be made available to all in the battle of ideas, Mufti said the trend set after 2002 had unfortunately been reversed. Now the government has only brute force, police, detention, jails and draconian laws to fall back upon, he said and added that even teenagers were not spared. He said the government is now trying to respond to every problem, be that of power, water, rations or even salary to employees through police action which has created a dangerous situation prone to a total collapse of the system.Mufti said on the one hand the government was claiming credit for the so called policy to allow youth back from PaK while on the other it had put in jail hundreds along side criminals. "The phony claims of the government are now a common knowledge, but the pain of the victims of its cruel policies goes unnoticed". He said and cautioned the government that the PDP would not desist from actively campaigning for the release of innocent detenues. Referring to recent statements from Government of India on the possible resolution of Kashmir, Mufti wondered how that could be achieved through dialogue in an atmosphere of state arrogance which does not tolerate any voice of dissent.
