| HC seeks explanation | | | JAMMU: Taking cognizance of a public interest litigation (PIL) the Srinagar bench of the High Court today directed the state government to explain its position viz-a-viz ongoing employee's strike by April 12. A division bench comprising Justice Husain Masoodi and Justice Yaqoub was constituted to hear the PIL preferred by Advocate Riyaz Ahmad Khan and basher Ahmad Dar. The petitioners said the government employees had no right to subject the common people to inconvenience. The Chief Secretary has been made a party in the PIL. A clause of the petition reads: "The tussle between government and the employees has deprived the public of essential services. Even medicare, municipal services and ration has been denied to the public. Do the government and the employees know how many people died for want for medicare during the past few days" Advocate Riyaz Ahmad told the court that the continued tussle between government and the employees may end up in imposition of heavy taxes on the gullible public. A campaign has already been launched by the government to this effect", he said. Other petitioner Advocate Bashir Ahmad Dar said neither the government nor the employees could take the general public for a ride. The court directed the government to come up with a detailed response to the petition soon. Meanwhile the High Court Bar Association dissociated itself from the PIL. "It has been filed by the advocates on their own. The Bar has nothing to do with it", a spokesman of the Association said. Advocate Riyaz clarified that the petition had nothing to with the bar association. "We have filed it to safeguard the interests of the public", he said.
