Stop converting Kashmir into playfield for intrigues
4/10/2010 12:14:48 AM

At one stage even Sheikh Abdullah used to blame the western nations for having made Kashmir as a playfield for international conspiracies. He has been right because during the last 60 years the Kashmir issue seems to have become ticklish, vexed and complicated because of the changing stance of the political leaders in the West as far as the issue is concerned.Right from the day the UN Security Council adopted a resolution providing for a plebiscite in Jammu and kashmir the slogan of right of self-determination has been doing the rounds in the Indian subcontinent. Till the end of 2000 the Indo-US relations had remained strained and the result was the the successive US Government continued to support the UN resolution on Kashmir despite the fact that Pakistan had not fulfilled the conditions that had been laid foor it which included withdrawal of troops from the entire occupied Kashmir.Whenever Washington felt pinched by Delhi's pro-Moscow tilt in its
foreign policy it would try to needle India by lending full spport to the UN resolution. On a number of occasions the American Government had supported Islamabad's plea for a third country mediation on Kashmir. It is after the Indo-US relations witnessed mar ked improvement, during the last over seven years that the American stand on the UN r esoltuon had changed. It no longer lays emphasis on its implementation. It has even rejected Islamaba's plea for a third party mediation. It even conveyed its no to Islamabad when Pakistan wanted the American Government to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir. The stand of the British Government
on the Kashmir issue has been similar to the one adopted by Washington a decade ago. What has surprised Delhi is the way senior leaders of British Leberal Democrats Party have raked up the issue of implementation of the UN resolution for resolving the Kashmir issue. The party leaders announced in Luton, during recent election campaign, that the Kashmir issue needed to be resolved through UN supervised referundum. No doubt political pundits in Delhi have not attached any significance to the Democrats' statement,it is a matter of concern. But reports said that the leaders of the British Liberal Democrats Party called for resolving the Kashmir issue through a referundum under the UN supervision simply to woo muslim voters in the
constituency.According to these reports Luton constit uency had a sizeable number of electorates and that is the reason the Democrats have fielded Qurban Hassein,a muslim,as its candidate. The reports also stated that the majority of muslims in the areas had come from Pakistan and other Islamic
countries whose heart usually throbbed with the slogan of referundum in Kashmir.Leaders of the Democrats Party wanted the Kashmir issue to be settled as per the wishes of the people of the state.Have these leaders lost sight of series of Assembly elections that were held from 1951 to 2008 where between 40 and 60 per cent people participated and cast their votes.Their vote was the outcome of their sweet will. They willed to participate in the democratic practices. They voted to elect a Government of their choice.Had even a fraction of the voters from the Ladakh region and the Jammu province boycotted the elections one could have said their they were not allowed to express their wish.It is only a small section of people in the Kashmir valley who have vested interest in keeping the Kashmir issue unsettled otherwise the instrument of accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh and later endorsed by Sehikh Abdullah has left no scope for nations and people to treat
Kashmir an unsettled issue.Hence time has come when India should copnvey in strong words its protest against those leaders and nations that wish to convert Kashmir playfield for international intrigues.
