| ‘Barsat Ki Raat’ staged in Sunday Theatre | | | Jammu , April 11
New Hindi play ‘Barsat Ki Raat’ based on a short story by Chirnjeev was staged here today at Natrang Studio Theatre in its weekly Sunday Theatre series. The play was directed by Balwant Thakur. The story of the play appears to be very simple but carries a deep insight into the complexities of human thought process. Enhanced by appropriate music and lighting effects, the play had a strong visual impact on the audience; they could feel the sensation and undercurrent of the story, acknowledging the strength of Intimate Theatre.
The play opens at a thunderous rainy evening, ‘Sheela’ a housewife is waiting for her husband ‘Prakash’ to come back from office, she is very anxious as he is already very late and it’s raining heavily. Horrified of repeated thunders and rain to the extent that she is even not ready to allow her maid ‘Sukhia’ to leave her alone. She is horrified by the total environment around and is not able to find any secure space in the house. Out of nowhere, she had an apprehension that ‘Som’ is chasing her to take the revenge of his unsuccessful love. Som had one sided love for her before she was married, he even tried to disrupt her marriage ceremony for that criminal act he has been jailed for four years. She visualizes as if Som is outside her home, and making all attempts to break open his entry. With every succeeding thunder, her heart sinks and she cries for help. She becomes so much hallucinated that an act of some radio play sounds like real news of a prisoner breaking jail, even a cat in the kitchen appeared as a hardcore murderer who has come to her. All the apprehensions were proved wrong at the end when her husband comes home and makes her to rethink the events in a rational and positive manner. The play like all the plays of Natrang, leaves a very strong message, it urges us to be logical in our thinking and not to get swayed by false apprehensions. Most of the times we create miseries for ourselves out of our own illusions and evolve issues of non issues which finally ruins our peaceful life.
Romilla Besnet as ‘Sheela’ was very impressive; she maintained the schizophrenic tinge required for the character throughout the play. She was well supported by Rajni Bhatti as ‘Sukhia’ who was appropriate in timings & expressions to supplement the expression of the play. Pankush Verma as ‘Prakash’ was also successful in reflecting the character of a cool minded & rational person. Lights were executed by Mohit Sharma, Rohit verma scored the music. Mohd. Yaseen and Sona Mehar looked after the hall management. The show was coordinated by Sumeet Sharma. The presentations of the play were done by Balwinder Singh and Vikram Sharma. |
