| Bureau Chief, among six fake journalists held at Awantipora | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 13: A self-styled Bureau Chief and five other fake media persons, including two women, were today arrested by police at Awantipura in Kashmir. They moved on Awantipora roads in a Tata Sumo and then extorted money from innocent people by blackmailing them, Awantipora SSP Bashir Ahmad Khan said. They were identified as fake bureau chief of non-existent news channel IKB, Bashir Ahmad Dar of Zaldora, Anantnag, sub-editor Shahnaz Ahmad Shah of Charar-e-Sharief, crime reporter Mohammad Ameen Lone of Duroo, Anantnag, and cameraman Nadeem Sofi of Maliknag, Anantnag. The SSP said the identity of the two women had been kept a secret due to certain reasons. One of them hailed from Anantnag and the other from Awantipora. Their modus operandi was very simple. The two women used to take lift in a car and the other gang members follow them secretly. While following, they used to take shots of the car operator with the women. When the work was done by their gang members, the women would get down from the car. "This is when the role of the bureau chief and his team begins," the SSP said. They would approach the car operator, introduce themselves as journalists and then show him his video footage with the women. By threatening to telecast it in their fake channel, they would then extort money from the car operator. Khan said Saturday last, one Tanvir Ahmad became victim of the gang when the two women approached him for a lift while he finished tea at a roadside teastall. The SSP said when Tanvir gave them lift, their accomplices made his short movie with the women in his moving car. By showing Tanvir the video footage later, they allegedly extorted Rs 40,000 from him, he added. Tanvir then brought the matter to the notice of Awantipora police. The SSP said all the accused were identified and arrested today. He said apart from fake press cards, police had seized their camera, a tripod stand and a Tata sumo. A case under sections 392, 388, 420 and 120-B RPC stands registered against them at the Awantipora police station.
