| Devika Baisakhi mela begins at Udhampur | | | SARITA JAMWAL

UDHAMPUR, Apr 14: Three days long historic Baisakhi mela was inaugurated by District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Baseer Ahmed Khan on the holy Devika river in Udhampur town this morning.
Beside others, Suriender Gupta SSP Udhampur , Swatenter Dev Kotwal president Baisakhi mela committee , Advocate Surinder Khajuria and Pandit Madan Lal Sharma of App Shambu temple were present .
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner extended his warm and good wishes to the people on this auspicious occasion and hoped that the festival would be celebrated with fervour and gaiety which would further help in strengthening the communal harmony and brotherhood. Surinder Khajuria also threw light on the religious sanctity of Devika rivulet as well as importance of this mela which is being celebrated here at the bank of Devika from time immemorial.
Number of temporary sweet shops, toy shops and other eatable corners by the locals as well as outside vendors are the main attraction for the general public visiting the mela site. Out-numbered children were seen enjoying the courageous act of motor cyclist, driving bikes in the death well.
Madan Lal Sharma of Shiv Temple said that the three -day Mela would culminate with free style wrestling match in which number of wrestlers from within and outside the state are expected to participate.
