Presidential Elections 2006-07: All is not well with JUTA
10/14/2006 9:35:29 PM
Jammu, Oct 14: All does not seem to be well within Jammu University Teachers Association, which is going to polls for the post of president on Monday. Though most of the posts of the association have been filled up unanimously, a tug of war is going on between the two candidates for the post of president.
Sources within the JUTA revealed that the Association election on Monday is likely to witness a tough contest as both the candidates have been working hard to win. However, denial of voting rights to adhoc teachers was a matter of concern for the university teachers who see this development as motivated and well planned.
Sources within the association said that one of the candidates for the post of president also wrote to Prof SK Sharma, Election Commission regarding the `unjustified’ denial of the right to the adhoc teachers. “The new measure is neither based on past precedents nor is morally acceptable to the bulk of JUTA members”, the representation sent to election commissioner reads.
However, neither any action was taken with regard to the concern expressed by one of the candidate nor the meeting of executive committee of the association was ever called.
One of the presidential candidates, Dr Kuldeep Singh Charak of Mathematics Department alleged that from the day one there was a section of teachers who wanted a `unanimously chosen president’. “I was even pressurized to withdraw the candidature and for them I was not having the exposure to lead an association having members senior to me in the field”, he alleged.
When the lobby failed, he alleged further, the voter list was amended and adhoc teachers, who have traditionally been voting in JUTA elections, were dropped from the list. There were at least 50 adhoc teachers, who as per the sources were otherwise eligible for casting votes in the association election.
Sources said that the JUTA has more than 300 votes and election for the post of president would be held on Monday, October 16 at Jammu University. Dr JS Tara of Deptt of Zoology, Dr GL Wazir of Directorate of Distance Education, Dr Romesh Kumar of Mathematics Department and Dr Ram Bhadur of Department of Sanskrit have already been nominated for the post of Vice President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer.
