| Contractors to go on strike from April 16 | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Apr 14: As the employees called off their 11-day-long strike, the contractors have now decided to go on strike from April 16 in support of their demands. The decision to go on strike from April 16 was taken at a meeting of the Central Contractors Coordination Committee (CCCC), said its chairman Haji Mohammad Akbar Pal and convenor Tasaquk Hussain Laway in a statement here today. They alleged that two per cent sales tax imposed by the government was not justified and unbearable for contractors. Haji Pal and Laway said the contractors were not paid bills worth crores of rupees by different departments. They said since their tax was being deducted at the time of payment of bills, they should not be involved in filing of returns. They alleged that iron, cement and pipes being supplied by departments to them were costly against rates in the open market and amendment in the present schedule because of increase in rates. The CCCC threatened to go on strike from Friday if their demands were not met by the government.
