6 cops among 20 injured in Sopore

JAMMU: Apple town Sopore witnessed violent clashes between stone pelting youth and the police Wednesday in protest against death of a student during Hurriyat G sponsored strike yesterday. The Sopore people accuse police and the CRPF of forcing the 17-year-old student, Zubair Ahmad jump into Jehlum along with his friends. However, CRPF officials maintain the death was accidental.
Daring massive security arrangements and restrictions under section 144 CrPC, the stone pelting youth engaged the police and the CRPF in ding dong battles for whole day at Muslim Peer, Iqbal Market, Sangrama, Putushah, Batpora and Main Chowk areas. Hundreds of tear smoke shells were fired to disperse the protesters who raised slogans against the police and demanded stern action against the culprits. The police finally fired several rounds in air. Twenty persons including six police men sustained injuries in the clashes.
A shell hit a protester causing serious injury to him. He was rushed to Soura medical institute where the doctors operated upon him. His condition is stated to be critical. He has been identified as Muntazir Bashir.
Meanwhile, the town observed total strike today to protest the killing. All shops and commercial establishments remained closed. Traffic was off the roads. The town presented a deserted look.
The killing evoked severe response in Baramulla town as well. Youth pelted stones on the police causing injuries to three police men. Normal life in the town remained affected due to strike.
The JKLF chairman, Malik Muhammad Yasin visited Sopore today and expressed sympathy with the bereaved family. He accused the police and CRPF men of murdering of the student. "Our children are getting killed. We should strengthen our peaceful movement. The JKLF shall hold a protest demonstration on April 17 at Srinagar", he said while addressing the people at Jamia Qadeem area.
Salvation Movement chairman, Zaffar Akber Bhat also visited the town and visited the bereaved family.
