| Singh tells Pak to act against Lashkar activists | | | As was expected the Indian Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh, showed no interest in a separate session with his Pakistani counterpart,Yousuf Raza Gilani,on the sidelines of the recently concluded Nuclear Security summit in Washington. The two shook hands and exchanged pleasantries.Nothing beyond that.In fact Gilani had been very keen to have even brief dialogue with Singh and in this connection the former had tried to persuade the top US functionaries for arranging a meeting with Singh. The US authorities had no desire to intervene after Manmohan Singh explained to the US President,Barack Obama, the inherent difficulties he would face back in India if he agreed to talk to Gilani when Islamabad had not taken adequate steps for dismantling terror infrastructure in Pakistan as demanded by Delhi. It was during his press conference that Manmohan Singh demonstrated his political acumen when he plainly told a newsman that there was no question of resuming dialogue with Islamabad unless Pakistan took adequate steps against the terrorists, especially the activists and leaders of Lashkar-i-Toiba. The Indian Prime Minister also stated that the activists of Lashkar-i-Toiba had masterminded the Mumbai carnage and "we will be too willing to resume t alks with Islamabad once the perpetrators of Mumbai were punished."Manmohan was at his best when he shot back "how many times have we to produce evidence against Lashkar-i-Toiba" when a newsman referred to Gilani's speech during the summit in which he had stated that Islamabad would t aken action against Lashkar if more evidence against the outfit was given.Singh said that even the US intelligence agency had established the involvement of Lashkar men in the Mumbai mayhem. This way Islamabad is blamed for simply wasting time and trying to deviate from the main issue.Well India, like other western nations, have appreciated the military crackdown ordered by Islamabad against the Talibans and the Al Qaeda in the Swat valley,in Waziristan and on the Pak-Afghan border belts but they do not seem impressed by the claims of Pakistan as far as its action against Lashkar is concerned. On many an occasions Delhi has conveyed to Islamabad that Lashkar activists and leaders posed a real threat to India and its people.Hence its wants Pakistan to order a military crackdown on the activists and leaders of Lashkar-i-Toiba. Intelligence inputs reveal that besides having been involved in the Mumbai mayhem the Lashkar activists have been quite active in Jammu and Kashmir. Its activists have carved out hideouts in various areas of the valley and in the border belts of Poonch,Rajouri besides some segments of Doda-Kishwar area. These reports suggest that the keys of terrorist activit ies in Jammu and Kashmir wer e in the hands of the field commanders of Lashkar-i-Toiba.Therefore,India is right if it has conveyed to Pakistan that a crackdown on Lashkar could facilitate reopening of the channels of dialogue.Political pundits say that Islamabad continues to be reluctant to move against Lashkar men because its believes that its activists could be useful in mounting pressure on India so that Delhi restarts the coosite dialogue for settling the Kashmir issue.Delhi, this time, means business. And if Islamabad is keen to see the stalled talked resumed it should act fast against activists and leaders of Lashkar-i-Toiba.
