| Targeting women, children: change in pattern of operations by terrorists | | | Sandeep Bhat
The recent killing in Poonch by the terrorists where in five women and children were killed on July 12 is deviation from the past where males members of a family were first segregated and then killed. This trend was based on the directions from across as revealed by intercepts. The directions were that children, ladies and elders should not be targeted. Only the minorities were to be targeted. Not withstanding these instructions, the terrorists have targeted a number of children and women during the last few months. The terrorists are now avoiding the security forces and targeting soft targets.
It may be recalled that 22 years old late Ms Tasleem Akhtar daughter of Mohammad Latif was killed by the terrorists on the night of 24/25 Feb. In this case she had refused to many a terrorist. Another girl from Muradpur, Rajouri had earlier died after she was gang raped. Incidences of such nature are far from few.
The terrorists are now avoiding the security forces firstly because their numbers are depleting. Though this is being countered from across by maintaining a steady flow of terrorists. The second reason which has come to light, as the intercept if terrorists communications reveal, is that after reaching here they have seen with their own eyes that the situation in India is very different from what they have been told during their indoctrination in the training Camps across the Line of Control. These terrorists now doubt the basic cause of Jihad. Its is the lure of money and personal ego which is now compelling them to continue .The third reason is that they have realized that they are no match to the security forces and they are fighting a lost cause.
But the mentors from across however have justified their existences are now exhorting to terrorists to resort to more killings is setting dead lines. One can listen to long moral lectures being given by the seniors from across. However these transmissions are not one sided. Terrorists from this side have started questioning certain issues which is also a deviation from the past. One thing which the buzurgs from across are ensuring is that there is no death in flow of money, arms and ammunition.
To meet these deadlines of creating atrocities in this region the soft opinion now available to these terrorists is to target women and children. Which they are resorting to. At times this also helps them to satisfy their lust.
Areas which are in the vicinity of the security forces are generally free of such incidents. Also in areas were Village Defence Committees are active, the terrorists do not venture, as has been evident for some time now. Therefore to prevent further atrocities the people must now come together to save women and children being killed by the terrorists. Any support for their existence must be denied and resisted. Instances have also come to light when such persons helping them have been targeted by terrorists the requisite help and had been provided.
