| Akhoon meets Union Agri Minister Centre to continue additional quota of food grains for J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, Apr 15: Responding to the State's request, the Union Government has agreed to continue 33000 Mts tones per month of foodgrains quota to Jammu and Kashmir under Open Market Scheme Domestic (OMSD) category to tide over its increased demand due to continued drought and 100 percent take off of food grains from the Government ration depots of the State. This will be in addition to the normal ration quota of 63067 Mts per month. This assurance was given by the Union Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar to the Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&-PD), Qamar Ali Akhoon at a high level meeting held at New Delhi today. The Union Minister of State for CA&PD Thomas, Union Secretary CA&PD, Alka Sirohi, Commissioner/ Secretary CA&PD, J&K, Asgar Samoon, concerned officers of the Union Government and the representative of Food Corporation of India were also present in the meeting. The centre has also agreed to restore and regulate the sugar quota of 7000 Mts per month to the J&K State to meet its requirements. Union Agriculture Minister also assured Akhoon of outright support and assistance for construction of Food Storage Godowns in various areas of the State to enable stocking of surplus food grains to meet its requirements round the year. Akhoon strongly pleaded for enhancing BPL ration quota at the rate of 24 percent to J&K against existing 5 percent quota adding that the population of the State has increased manifolds during the last ten years when the census was conducted in 2001. Pawar assured that the demand of the J&K State in this regard would be considered only after the final BPL lists are made available by the Planning Commission of India shortly. Akhoon thanked the Centre, particularly Union Agriculture Minister for continuing additional ration and sugar quota to the J&K State.
