EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 15: Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Taj Mohi ud Din today directed the engineers to utilize all the additional water available in Tawi this summer to bring more areas under irrigation. He also directed pacing up of remaining works of flood protection on Tawi banks.
The direction came during a meeting of officers to review the progress of Tawi beautification plan and availability of water for irrigation purposes in Jammu for the ongoing summer.
Under the Tawi Beautification Plan, the water level in the river would be maintained at a constant level by constructing a barrage.
The meeting discussed in detail the Tawi Master Plan under which barrages of 379 metres would be constructed in both streams of River Tawi. This is to ensure a constant water level in the river, make it navigational and enhance the aesthetic level of Tawi basin. Besides, the plan envisages reclaiming around 7000 kanals of land from Tawi bridge to Sidhra bridge once the plan fully takes off.
The tendering process, the meeting was told, has been initiated and would be completed within two to three months. Taj directed completion of the tendering process within the scheduled time.
Addressing the meeting, the Minister said the plan aims at beautifying the Tawi River to make it an added attraction as a picnic spot. "The barrage can be an ideal destination for the people to enjoy boat rides", he said. The Minister also directed the Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control, Jammu to utilize the additional 700 cusecs of water mage available this season for irrigating the kandi and far flung areas of Jammu. For this, he directed the department to arrange more lifts to bring more land under irrigation.
