| No correspondence between Govt, President on Afzal's mercy petition | | |
Pune, Oct 14: There has been no correspondence between the UPA government and President's office regarding the mercy petition of Mohammad Afzal, who has been sentence to death in the Parliament attack case, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Prithiviraj Chavan said on Saturday.
The mercy petition is pending with the President and so far nothing on it has been placed before the Union Cabinet, he said in reply to a query on what comments have been given to the President on Afzal's mercy petition.
On the issue of special economic zones, he said the SEZs have been a great success in countries like China. However, the ground reality prevailing in China and India is different. In China everything is state-controlled unlike in India and therefore our policy on SEZs needs some corrections.
Only wastelands must be considered for the development of special economic zones. Agricultural land where two crops are harvested should not be acquired for SEZs and as far as acquisition of land is concerned, the matter must be left to farmers and the interested organisations, he added.
