Cong factions keep 'political show' alive
Baisakhi Milan to counter 'official' festival
4/16/2010 12:27:53 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, April 15: With some respite from acrimony between traditional rivals NC and PDP after the Assembly session, the political scene appeared to be a little dull and drab. But thanks to the two warring factions of Congress which keep the 'show' going at least in Jammu. If the group comprising PCC Chief Prof Soz loyalists were on centre stage of 'performance' in Baisakhi festival for the last two days, the ante Ghulam Nabi Azad group could not take it anymore. Not to lag behind, this group today organised "Baisakhi Milan", apparently to counter what the other group has been upto for the last two days.
The function organised at Institute of Engineering Gandhi Nagar this evening, although a low key activity in comparison to the " semi official Baisakhi extravaganza" by the other group did witness participation of stalwarts like Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, veteran Gujjar leader Choudhary Mohammad Aslam, former ministers Jugal Kishore Sharma and Choudhary Gharu Ram, ex minister from Kargil Haji Nisar ALi besides others. There were also some non political friends including some media persons as well.
One can attribute the functions led by Soz group at various places from Suchetgarh to Akhnoor as 'semi official' as the main ruling ally of coalition NC was conspicuous by its absence in the so called official 'Baisakhi Basket', not to speak of leaders of the Azad faction. The official tag will remain because of the involvement of Tourism Department and its paraphernalia in the show. Now as far as political scores and points are concerned, this group managed to garner to do things in whatever way they deemed proper, with no checks from NC at any stage.
It was apparently to counter this show that the Azad faction woke up, albeit shorn of any sharp political shine, which has lately been seen missing in its other activities too. In never too late message, the leaders of this group in their political tete-tete did make some onslaught and hammerings on the other group for what they repeatedly said " the development works and the other contributions made in just two years by Ghulam Nabi Azad during his stewardship as Chief Minister can in way be undermined and overlooked..........it cannot be tolerated anymore any politician underrating his tenure.......so on ....". This was the undercurrent message of almost all the leaders.
Without naming any leader, the Congress leaders in today's function of Baisakhi Milan also came down heavily and expressed concern over what they also said as some leaders 'encroaching' upon the genuine cadres of Congress. The hit in bits was obviously to the main political hero behind organising Baisakhi festival on a different pattern this year. Other political talking points concerning Congress also came in for threadbare discussion. All these things however came up in a very informal manner in this Baisakhi Milan. The absence of other vocal leaders of this group GM Saroori- cabinet minister in present dispensation and ABdul Ghani Vakil was however conspicuous.
The factionalism ridden J&K state Congress in the process of maintaining edge over one another has always been unfolding many such interesting things , rather bickerings on typical "Saas Bahu naggings". In the show of one upmanship and race for consolidating political grounds, the two factions have been organising rallies and public functions for quite some time. Many times the functions run on parallel lines with only venues that differ. The focus of each group, however, is to demonstrate show of strength and supremacy over one another.
