| Police organizes Debate on human rights | | Chairperson SHRC exhorts role of men in uniform to honour human rights | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 16: The Chairperson, Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission, Justice (Retd) Syed Bashir-ud-din has said that Jammu and Kashmir Police has a great responsibility to honour human rights of the people, being defenders of their rights. He said that JKP has to uphold its record of human rights which they have gained among the forces of the country.
Chairperson was speaking on a debate on Human Rights organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Police Auditorium Gulshan Ground.
The State level debate on the topic “There should be equal condemnation of human rights violations committed by security forces and Terrorists” was chaired by Justice (Retd), Syed Bashir-ud-din.
Sixteen speakers belonging to different wings of Police Organization participated in the debate and the designated jury adjudged Jalal-ud-din, Gurjot Kour and Pardeep Kumar 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Chief Guest in his address threw light on human rights and emphasized the need to organize such debates so that common people get awareness about their rights. He said that by organizing such functions, the police organization can achieve good results in educating their men and officers to honour the human rights.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General of Police (DGP), Kuldeep Khoda said that Jammu and Kashmir Police has always upheld the human rights despite working in tough situations. He said that the figures of collateral damages during the past years have come down considerably and it is result of public cooperation that the police along with other security forces are conducting successful operations against the militants without causing any civil causalities. He said that organization has introduced human rights as a subject in its training institutions and is also deputing its officers and men outside the state for getting specialized trainings on the subject. He reminded the men in khaki that they have been administered an oath at their enrolment in the department to safeguard the rights of the people and thus they have more responsibility to uphold their oath. The civil society has great expectations with the force and we have to come up their expectations to achieve better results, Khoda added.
Khoda stressed upon the scholars and media fraternity to bring the facts to the public in right perspective as some vested interests are always trying to exploit the situations out of proportion to misguide the people.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Additional Director General of Police (CID), K Rajendra Kumar gave a detailed resume about the awareness programme organized by the Police Organization.
