| No check on sale of unhygienic cut fruits, juices | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 17: Even as the health wing officials of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) seldom miss any opportunity saying they had been trying hard to tighten its noose on roadside vendors for maintaining hygienic conditions, the practice of selling unhealthy and unhygienic eatables goes on unabatedly. A visit to various areas of the city revealed that small-time vendors were selling cut fruit and sugarcane juice under unhygienic conditions and people relishing the same, putting their health at risk. Water is occasionally sprayed on cut fruits to give them a fresh look. However, the water is, too, stored in old rusted containers. Though they have been selling eatables and juices brazenly violating the laid down norms, the officials have developed a nexus with the officials at the helms of affairs. When a fruit seller was asked about cleanliness, he replied: "Health-conscious people come here to have fruits. You mind your own business." Sources informed that though the civic body has launched a drive against the roadside vendors selling adulterated eatables and juices yet the situation has not been improved and filthy conditions around the 'rehris' has become a permanent nuisance for pedestrians, besides the source of several diseases. "Some of rehri operators have developed a nexus with the officials and pay them a hefty amount on daily basis. Instead of taking action against such rehri operators, the officials prefer to turn blind eye over the issue," said official sources, adding, "With summer setting in, it becomes the prime responsibility of the JMC officials to keep check over the selling of unhygienic juices by roadside vendors." A senior health officer seeking anonymity admitted the nexus between officials and rehri operators and said, "The Inspectors, who generally conduct visit on these roadside establishments, are being paid monthly by rehri operators. Though the higher officials are well aware about the menace, yet they are reluctant to take stern action against such officials." He however, informed, "The Corporation has decided to seize the rehris or any food establishment if it found violating the laid down norms under the PFA Act. If somebody does not fulfill the criteria, it would not allow them to run the rehri or any other establishment." He further informed that the wing would further intensify its drive and all sweet shops, food establishments, restaurants and hotels would be checked properly. "We have also planned to introduce the grading system under which each restaurant and hotel would be awarded grade on the basis of its sanitary conditions. It has been decided to ensure hygienic conditions in all food establishments in this summer season," he maintained.
