| Akhoon calls on Union Transport Minister | | Demands release of Rs 33.82 cr Central Share Paid Capital to SRTC | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, Apr 17: The state government today sought from the Centre release of the balance amount of Rs. 33.82 crore as Paid up Capital admissible under Sec.22(1)(v) of Central Road Transport Act 1950 as central share for meeting expenditures to revamp the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) on modern lines. The demand was projected by the Minister for Transport, CA&PD, Qamar Ali Akhoon in a meeting with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Kamal Nath at New Delhi today. Akhoon pleaded that as per the provisions laid under Sec.22(1)(v) of Central Road Transport Act 1950, paid up Capital of SRTC was required to be shared between Central and State Governments in the ratio of 33:67 but the Centre has released only Rs.8.57 crore against its share of Rs.42.39 crore, leaving a short fall of Rs.33.82 crore. Akhoon sought personal intervention of Kamal Nath for early release of the balance amount so that it could be utilized for renovation of SRTC without any delay. Akhoon also sought from the centre grant of compensation in lieu of 117 SRTC vehicles damaged during turmoil in the State. He requested the Union Transport Minister to compensate SRTC by way of granting Rs. 15.52 crores for replacement of the damaged transport fleet adding that a proposal in this regard has already been submitted to the Centre. Kamal Nath was also requested to sanction two projects for SRTC to provide transportation in the far-flung areas of J&K and special scheme for creation of efficient transport facilities for rural and tribal areas of the State. Akhoon sought a financial assistance to the tone of Rs.7.07 crore and Rs.118.80 crore respectively for these projects which have already been submitted to the centre. Akhoon also requested the Union Minister to approve the project for providing Intelligent Tracking System (ITS) and GPS for SRTC vehicles. He also discussed with the Union Minister various other issues concerning improvement in road transport services in J&K and urged for expediting the progress regarding construction of proposed tunnels on National Highway-1A, tunnels at Gurez (Razdan Pass), Simthan Pass, Zojila etc. Kamal Nath assured that the proposals and demands put forth by the State Govt. would be considered favourably and promptly. Managing Director, SRTC Anoop Kannaw, was also present in the meeting.
