BJP seeking rejection to clemency plea for Guru
District units to submit memorandum to President
10/14/2006 9:50:53 PM
Jammu,October 14:-The state unit of the BJP has decided to initiate fresh moves for countering those who have been seeking clemency for Mohd.Afzal Guru, sentenced to death on charge of his involvement in terrorist strike on Parliament on December 13,2001.
Under the plan all the district units of the BJP will send a memorandum to the President of India requesting him not to grant any clemency to Mohd.Afzal Guru.
According to the party President,Dr Nirmal Singh, the office bearers of each of the districts in the Jammu region will meet within next four days for framing the memorandum.””we shall received the memoranda before October 18 which were to be submitted to the President of India,”Dr Singh told Kashmir Independent Press in Jammu on Saturday.
The BJP President said that any clemency to Mohd.Afzal Guru “will encourage militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir.” He said “if the mercy petition was accepted by the President it will tentamount to disrespecting the country’s sovereignty and integrity which had come under threat from the terrorist strike on Parliament.”He said “legal angle apart Mohd.Afzal Guru had not so far signed any mercy petition which indicated that he was not seeking any clemency as he was not repentant on what he had done.”
Dr Nirmal Singh said that the Mahila Wing of the BJP will hold anti-Guru demonstration in Jammu on October 17 in support of their demand for honouring the court verdict.
He said right from the advent of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir the successive state Governments have committed blunder after blunder which had “boosted the morale” of the rebels. In support of his contention he said that those arrested on charge of involvement in serious crimes and violence were allowed to receive VIP treatment in jails.
The Government succumbed to the pressure mounted by so called human rights activists with the result the security forces have not been given “a free hand” in tackling the activities of militants. He said the rehabilitation scheme introduced by the Government was yet another blunder. He said he had reports that even after surrendering militants on one hand received cash assistance,in some cases jobs,on the other they continued to indulge in subversive activities.
Dr Nirmal Singh said that if the Government ordered a judicial probe it will unearth the gamut of behind the scene activities being carried out by those youths who had surrendered.
