| Tragic twist of fate takes lives of man, daughter | | | JAMMU: In a bizarre and tragic twist of fate, a man poisoned himself to death at his residence in Doda after he discovered that he had given his daughter "rat killer" kept in an empty bottle of cough syrup. Sabiya (10), who was not keeping well, coughed all Saturday night at their residence at Gandana Gadtar in Doda, police sources said, quoting family members. Father Ghulam Mohammad Bhat took out a cough syrup bottle from an almirah and gave two to three spoonfuls of the "medicine" to his ailing daughter. Sabiya, a class V student, died soon thereafter. Bhat then realised that the liquid in the bottle was poison used to kill rats and not cough syrup. He had given poison to his daughter mistaking it for medicine, the sources added. Shocked at the sudden death of his daughter and unable to bear the onerous burden of the "sin", he also consumed the rat poison from the same bottle and ended his life. Sources said both the father and the daughter were taken to hospital, but doctors declared them brought dead. The rat poison had been kept in the empty cough syrup bottle by the family. Police had registered a case in this connection.
