J&K cadre IAS officer to take charge of police modernisation at the Centre
4/20/2010 1:24:30 AM
NEW DELHI: One of the most senior IAS officers from Jammu and Kashmir cadre Anil Goswami has been asked to look after the task of police modernisation in the Union Ministry for Home Affairs.

A 1978 batch IAS officer, Goswami has earlier been posted as an Additional Secretary in Union Home Ministry to mainly look after foreigners. But now sources say that among his other duties he would be handling the long pending task of modernising and making up-to-date the Indian police system.

Given UPA Government and also Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s focus on reforming and improving policing throughout the country, Goswami is thought to have got a prestigious as well as challenging assignment.

Earlier, Goswami was thought to be one of the main contenders for the post of Chief Secretary in Jammu and Kashmir since another officer Parvez Dewan who is even senior to Goswami has gone abroad on a study leave.

A choice for new Chief Secretary would have to be made by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah early next year when the present incumbent SS Kapur is slated to retire.
