EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 19: Reliable sources have told the Early Times that the prestigious “Majaraja Gulab Singh Chair in the University of Jammu is on the verge of closure”. According to the sources, “obstacles are being created by the University council with a view to making the Chair non-functional”. In this regard, the sources have pointed to two developments. One was that the “term of the fellows attached to the Chair has expired” and the “Chair Professor is not being able to get their term extended because there are elements in the University Council who do not want this Chair to function”. The other was that the “casual lobourer, who was attached to the Chair, has not been paid his wages since months, despite the fact that his tenure was extended way back in November-December 2009”.
Sources have further revealed that the “Maharaja Gulab Singh Trust, which is funding the Chair, stands for the existing arrangement for another six months after which new Professor would be appointed to head the Chair”. The University of Jammu got this prestigious Chair because of the relentless efforts put in by the former Sadar-e-Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir and presently Member of Rajya Sabha Dr Karan Singh. According to the sources close to the university administration, it was Dr Karan Singh who persuaded the University Grants Commission to establish Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair in the University of Jammu.
Sources further disclosed that “one very senior functionary in the University Council, who also holds the constitutional office, is behind the move aimed at making the Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair dysfunctional”. “He is sitting over a file concerning the Chair since October 2009”, sources have told the Early times, and added, “this inaction on his part has created the whole confusion and uncertainty”. He, according to the sources, is not happy on two counts. One: The “Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair Professor Hari Om has written a book on the Amarnath Land Row”. Two: “During the Amarnath Land Row, Dr Karan Singh had demanded the appointment of a new Governor in the state”.
The Early Times correspondent interacted with various university dons and students to ascertain their views on the state of affairs as far as the functioning of the Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair was concerned. Most of them expressed the view that “ this is another conspiracy against Jammu province hatched by anti-Jammu forces in the government and University Council”. When contacted, Prof Hari Om refused to comment.
