| Red alert on Jammu-Pathankote highway after two infiltrators trapped near Kathua | | The duo entered J&K from the neighbouring Punjab | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 19: Breaching the barbed-wire border fencing with an IED blast, two Pak militants, who Monday infiltrated into India from the neighbouring Punjab, were trapped by police at Rajbagh in Kathua after they sneaked into J&K. At the time of going to the print at about 1 am, the two militants were trapped in a forest nursery which falls between the border Chhabbe Chak village of Rajbagh and the Ujh nullah. From 6.55 pm to 1 am, they fired twice on police and army, but no harm was caused. In retaliatory fire, one of them was wounded in the leg, according to police sources. The duo infiltrated into Indian territory from the Simble Spoll border area of Punjab by blowing the border fencing with an IED blast. When contacted, SSP Gurdaspur confirmed that two Pak-based militants had successfully infiltrated from Simble Spoll which adjoins Narote Jaimal Singh in Bomial, Gurdaspur. The area is in close vicinity of Kathua. Sources said from Simble Spoll, they took the Kathua route and reached the border fields of Hariachak at Rajbagh in the afternoon. In the fields, they held hostage Balkari, an elderly man, who was
cutting grass for cattle. They offered him a huge amount of money for guiding them out of the village safely, the sources added. They kept luring him till he tactfully left the field at about 5 pm by promising to come back after feeding grass to cattle. When he reached Hariachak village at about 5.30 pm, he came across sarpanch's son. He stopped him and told him about the presence of militants in the fields. The sarpanch's son immediately contacted Hariachak police post incharge Zamoor Singh on his cellphone, besides alerting SSP, Kathua, Gareeb Dass. Police had first contact with the militants when the latter fired at Zamoor and three cops who were stealithly heading towards their place of hiding. Fire was returned. Hearing the gunshots, jawans of territorial army and army also
reached the spot. SSP Gareeb Dass, who also reached the spot at about 7 pm, was personally heading an ambush team, besides monitoring the operation. Sources said finding themselves trapped, the militants immediately changed their position and took shelter in the nearby thickly forested nursery. The two carried haversacks and supported long beards. The head of one of them was shaved. Reinforcements had been rushed to the spot and all escape routes from the nursery plugged. Sources said when cops fired towards the nursery at about 11 pm, the militants had retaliated. The troops were planning to make use of LMGs and rocket launchers in the wee hours of Tuesday morning to eliminate the militants. Meanwhile, a red alert was sounded all along the Jammu-Pathanote National Highway and the border areas of Jammu. Army had taken control of the highway and all vehicles plying on it were being thoroughly checked by the jawans. Sources said BSF had also made additional deployments all along the International Border from Paharpur in Kathua to Akhnoor to foil any fresh infiltration attempt by the Pak-based militants. When reports last came in, police and army troops were gradually closing in on the nursery. |
