| BSNL employees strike hits services in Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 20: Telecommunication services were affected in entire Jammu region today as the executives and non-executives of state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) struck work indefinitely protesting against the government's plan for divestment in the telecom service provider. Though the strike was called off by the unions at around 3:00 p.m this afternoon, the work remained paralyzed till evening as the employees did not turn to their offices. The Union Government has assured the BSNL employees and the issue of disinvestment in the telecom Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) would be referred to a Group of Ministers and they (employees' representatives) would be consulted before taking other decisions with regard to BSNL. In Jammu, the employees and executives staged dharnas in their offices premises and shouted slogans against the Union government. BSNL offices at Gandhi Nagar, Bahu Plaza and Kacchi Chawni were closed as employees stayed away from their duties. The BSNL customers visiting these offices from far-off places were the worst affected as no official work was being done. The employees blamed the Central government for planning to implement a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for 100,000 employees across the country and warned that they would strongly oppose it. "The strike began at 6 a.m at all BSNL offices in the country. We will not give up our agitation till the government agrees to our demand," said an agitating employee. He alleged that the government has made no clear cut commitment on vital issues like disinvestment, VRS, ITS absorption and wage revision besides regularisation of contractual employees.
