| Zonal Conference on women's emancipation held | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 20: Jammu and Kashmir Women Society today organised a day-long Zonal Conference of All India Women's Conference (AIWC) North Zone here today to highlight the problems being faced by women and to bring awakening among the women. About 100 hundreds AIWC delegates from Delhi, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and J&K participated in the conference. Director J&K Handloom Chandra Gupta was the chief guest while Gomathi Nair, national president, AIWC presided over the occasion. In her welcome address, Nirmal Padha, president of the J&K Women Society stressed for dignified status to the women and ensure equal rights to them. She said a lot of work for upliftment of women has been done in Jammu and Kashmir but still there is need to put efforts to educate the women of rural and remote areas. She appealed the authorities to open shelter houses for destitute women in every district headquarters. In his address, Chandra Gupta said, "There is need to pay attention for the education of rural women so that they can be empowered." Gomathi Nair, national president, AIWC briefed the participants about the various activities for AIWC undertaken for the welfare of women. She said, "After formation of AIWC 1926 it has consultative status with United Nationals (ECOSOC), (UNICEF) and as affiliation with International Alliance for women Pan pacific and Sea women's Association COOGO FWP WRE and we have 15 branches and 100000 members." Ranjit Chatha, Zonal Organizer AIWC North Zone delivered vote of thanks.
