| Water requirements in kandi belt | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Apr 20: In order to meet the increased demand for drinking water due to continued dry spell and ensuing summer months in the kandi belt of Akhnoor constituency, the Minister for Health, Sham Lal Sharma has directed the officers to formulate a contingency plan to meet the situation. He called for pressing into service adequate tanker service to meet the emergencies. Interacting with the Sectoral Officers at a meeting held at Akhnoor today, the Minister stressed the need for monitoring the water supply position adding that the Village Level Committees (VLCs) should also work in close coordination with the PHE officials in their respective areas. He said that need of the hour is to make general public aware about the consequences of depleting water resources and inculcating the habit of judicious use of drinking water. He issued instructions for construction of reservoirs at a centrally located place in every village, so that surplus water could be stored for use through tanker service. To meet the requirements for the cattle, the Minister stressed for construction of check dams and developing the traditional sources like ponds in the kandi region, he said. He asked the officers to ensure active involvement of the local people in the development process so that benefits of various schemes percolate down to the needy. He also laid stress on the judicious use of funds, besides ensuring quality of work. While reviewing the ration supply position in the area, the Minister issued instructions to the Tehsil Supply Officer, Akhnoor to ensure adequate supply of essentials in the kandi belt. The Minister also paid a visit to Akhnoor hospital and took stock of the medicare facilities being provided to the patients. He issued instructions to the Block Medical Officer to immediately install a Water Cooler and a Generator Set adequate capacity for convenience of the people.
