| Factionalism in BJP: Distance widens within factions | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Apr 20: Majority of workers and leaders of the state unit of the BJP are said to be dissatisfied with the functioning of the party President, Shamsher Singh. Some of the BJP leaders had plans of raising the issue during the recent two-day meeting of the executive committee in Jammu but the party Chief had managed to win over some of his critics who helped him to keep the voice of dissent under the carpet. Party sources said that some senior leaders were unhappy over the selection of office bearers of the party and in this connection they referred to the selection of three party general secretaries from one belt of the city. Sources said that Shamsher Singh had not accommodated people of different ethnic groups in the organisation. Another section of the party leaders said that Manhas was trying to sideline those leaders who were senior and more experienced than him. The result was that the party had been plagued by factions within factions. Factionalism had widened the distance between the RSS and the BJP Chief which has not allowed the BJP a chance to highlight peoples' or regions problems with a united voice. One senior BJP leader alleged that as a result of factionalism, top leaders, including soers of the Assembly, were hobnobbing with the Chief Minister and his ministerial colleagues. However, supporters of some senior BJP leaders said that in order to get some peoples' problems redressed some of the BJP MLAs had to meet ministers and even the Chief Minister. Such an exercise has become necessary to resolve some of the difficulties of people, especially BJP supporters. They said that the Chief Minister and is ministerial colleagues were not untouchables and hence one should not attribute motives in the meeting between senior BJP leaders and the ministers. Political pundits say that the civic elections results will determine whether the BJP had lost its lustre, that it had gained during the two-month long agitation over the Amarnath Shrine Board land row, or it has succeeded to sustain it. They also expect Shamsher Singh to take into confidence senior party functionaries especially those who had headed the party at one stage or the other. Another senior BJP leader said that the civic elections were round the corner and the BJP leadership is yet to finalise the strategy for contesting these elections. He said that since the BJP had strong roots in the urban areas and the party should have finalised it's programme but again factionalism had forced the top leaders to function in different directions.
