| Centre's massive road network for J&K | | | NEW DELHI: Nearly 1,000 kilometre of modern, motorable road is being developed under the Prime Minister's package for highways and road development in the hilly and inhospitable terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. The estimated cost for this is Rs 2,628 crores. Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways RPN Singh told the Lok Sabha today that 977-kilometre-long roads including National Highways and State Roads are being developed in J&K. The roads being thus developed mainly are: 84-kilometre-long Mughal Road to provide connectivity to Poonch region; 14.4 kilometre-long Domel-Katra road, or NH-1C; 265 kilometre-long Batote-Kishtwar-Sinthanpass-Anantnag Road or NH-1B; 115.5-kilometre-long Srinagar-Uri Road or NH-1A, LOC Road; 43-kilometre-long Khanabal-Pahalgam Road; 37-kilometre-long Narbal-Tangmarg Raod; and 42 kilometre-long Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Road. The last of them also includes Kargil Town By-pass or NH-1D. According to the Minister, the Government has spent Rs 642.51 crores in 2007-08; and Rs 361.88 crores and Rs.387.56 crores (provisional figures) in 2008-09 and 2009-10 respectively on the development of National Highways in the border State of Jammu and Kashmir.
