| Promoting sports JKP's way: Players get cash prize, sports material | | DGP dedicates lawn tennis court to beginners in Police Lines | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 21: To further encourage sports culture in the force and boost the talented athletes, the Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda today handed over cash incentives to players for excelling in the various competitions held at the national level during the season and also handed over sports material in different games in a well organised function at Police Lines grounds, here this evening. The DGP also fulfilled his promise made during the All India Police Games in Lawn Tennis held in Jammu by dedicating lawn tennis coaching facility to the budding talent by formally inaugurating the clay court at Police Lines. The playing facility is meant for both civilians as well as the wards of police personnels. Also part of the function was handing over of around Rs 4 lakh utility material to an NGO-Basera-Tabassum (Borderless World Foundation), an NGO working for orphan children in the state. Speaking to the distinguished gathering of senior officers and athletes, the DGP unveiled the steps being undertaken to promote sports culture in the force. He said, "Sports is an important wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and efforts are being made to build state of the art infrastructure to equip our athletes with latest technology to make their presence felt not only at the national but international level." Earlier, Inspector General of Police Armed, Dilbag Singh said, "Except for the Jammu Marathon, the season's calendar of activities completed with the holding of today's function. Our calendar for the next year is almost ready and soon after the Darbar Move, the activities shall start." He disclosed that J&K Police have approached the All India Police Sports Board for allotment of one of the three events of wrestling, badminton and football to the state. Lawn Tennis coaching camp To begin with the J&K Police in association with Jammu and Kashmir Lawn Tennis Association (JKLTA) today kick started a coaching camp for boys and girls in the age group of 12 years to 17 years at the Police Lines courts. "We have extended the coaching facility and technical know how while providing of infrastructure is the duty of the police. A good number of young boys and girls have come forward to seek coaching, so it is an encouraging sign as for as the promotion of lawn tennis in J&K is concerned," general secretary of JKLTA, Capt Murti Gupta told Felicitation of dare devil, football teams The DGP felicitated the police dare devil team by handing over Rs 75,000 cash award for their excellent performance on Republic Day function today. The police football team was also rewarded for lifting the championship trophy in the 35th All India MKM Hind Zinc tournament held at Udaipur in Rajasthan. As also the police water sports team was honoured for wining a gold, three silver and five bronze medals in Kayaking and Canoeing events in the 9th All India Police Championship held at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh. Women boxers bring laurels In their maiden participation in the 58th All India Police Meet, the women boxers of J& Police clinched six bronze medals while the men team returned with a bronze. Five pugilists in men's section also made it to the quarterfinals. The DGP had special mention about the boxing coach, Inspector Satyakam Sharma for his tireless efforts to promote boxing. The Medal Winners: Anita Devi, Parveen Manhas, Anju Bala, Asha Jamwal, Simi Sharma, Nazia Kousar. Men: SPO Rahul Sharma. Those who lost in the quarterfinals were Raj Kumar, Ravinder Bushan and SPO Sunil Sharma. In handball, J&K Police reached the semi-finals while in hockey, basketball the men's teams played up to quarterfinals.
