| 56 surplus ReT teachers appointed in Mendhar | | Mess in Education deptt | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Apr 21: In sheer violation of norms, the School Education Department has appointed 60 educated youth as "surplus teachers" in Mendhar tehsil. It came to surface after two years of their appointment when the department had to convert 80 Education Guarantee Centers (EGS) of Mendhar tehsil into Primary Schools. The department had the vacancies of 100 Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers in these schools but it had appointed 160 with a surplus of 60 teachers. Sources said that all norms were violated while opening of these EGS centres in Mendher. "As per the guidelines, each EGS should be opened at a distance of one kilometer. Against the need of only 50 centres, the department had opened 80 centres in the area," sources maintained. "When these centres become eligible for conversion into Primary Schools, the department merged some EGS Centres and keep one kilometer distance but according to government directions the department had to convert all 160 Educational Volunteers into ReT teachers. There was need of only 100 ReT teachers but the department had appointed 160," sources maintained. They further maintained, "When the department issued orders of adjustments to these surplus teachers in different areas, unemployed local youth did not allow them to join. They alleged that it was violation of norms. As per norms, no ReT teacher can be appointed from outside ward or Mohalla." Reports said that when nine teachers reached at Zonal Education Office Mendher, local youth protested and locked the ZEO office. They were pacified after the intervention of SDM Mendher. "These appointments were made two years ago. It was the fault of the authorities two years ago when they opened these EGS Centres without following norms," local youth alleged. When contacted, Chief Education Officer RK Maini admitted that the department had appointed 56 surplus ReT teachers in Mendher. He however, said that they were appointed because of opening of large number of EGS centres.
