| This is too much, police tell Untoo | | | JAMMU: But for timely police action, former ISI Chief, Hamid Gul, Jama't-ud-Dawah chief, Hafiz Muhammad Sayed, Jaish-e-Muhammad founder Moulana Masood Azhar and Hizbul Mujahideen Supreme Commander Syed Salah-ud-Din would have addressed a seminar in the summer capital today. Chairman International Forum for Human Rights, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo was the host and the venue was a hotel in the heart of the town. The police laid siege to the hotel early in the morning. However, the chairman of the Forum, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo and JKLF(R) leader, Javed Ahmad Mir and Mushtaq Ahmad Waza somehow managed to reach the venue well in time. After coming to know about the arrival of the leaders, the police raided the hotel and took all of them into custody. Giving reasons for foiling Untoo's attempt to hold the `high profile' seminar; a top police official said: "Hafiz Sayed is one of the accused in Mumbai attacks. Masood Azhar is a proclaimed offender. How can we allow such activities here?" Normally the police allow seminars organized by the separatist organizations. The hosts are supposed to fill a prescribed form for information of the police. The police involvement in such seminars remains confined to reporting by the intelligence sleuths. Untoo had also invited Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and many others to the seminar. Geelani had, however, rejected the invitation owing to his engagements. Untoo was entrusted the job of sending local youth to Pakistan administered Kashmir (PAK) for arms training in 1990. He was taken into custody and detained for several years. After his release he founded the Human Rights Forum and documented cases of human rights violations. He was arrested in New Delhi five years ago and detained in Tihar Jail. Untoo says he was sodomised by Delhi police sleuths during interrogation. He was released last year and immediately after his release founded the International Forum for Human Rights. Untoo wanted to do something different. Usually the separatists do not own the militants publicly. Untoo is the first person who managed to persuade people like Hamid Gul, Hafiz Sayed and Moulana Azhar to address his seminar.
