| Snowfall in Valley, Sgr-Leh NH closed | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Apr 21: Kashmir Valley today witnessed heavy rainfall that thrown life out of gear in several parts of Valley. All the major rivers are continuously rising. The rainfall is being seen as a welcome after unprecedented hot march month this year and less snowfall. The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed yet again after fresh snowfall and avalanches this morning between Sonamarg and Meenamarg. ''We had to suspend the movement of light vehicles on the highway because of fresh snowfall, avalanches and zero visibility,'' BEACON sources said. The highway was put through for light vehicles on April 17 while it was reopen for heavy vehicles from tomorrow. They said that fresh snowfall was experienced from Sonmarg to Meenamarg, including Zojila pass. They further added, ''Once the snowfall stops, we will press into service our sophisticated snow cutters and machines and men to put the traffic through again.'' But, sources said, there was just zero visibility in the area, making the snow clearance operation almost impossible and risky. ''The area is avalanche prone and we cannot take any risk by allowing the traffic movement without ensuring property safety,'' sources informed, adding, ''Once the snowfall stops, we will start operation to clear the avalanche.'' They further maintained, ''but we also want to ensure that there is no threat of avalanche. ''The Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed to traffic today as high altitude areas of Kashmir valley experienced fresh snowfall for the third day.
