| Mercury slips as light rains hit Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 21: Providing the much-needed respite from the blistering heat, the light showers of rains in the district today cheered the local residents easing pressure on the electricity as well as water supplies. The urbanites as well as ruralities heaved a sigh of relief as the mercury dipped to a considerable low after the rains. The weather remained pleasant throughout the day as the drizzle continued till this evening. For the past many days, there was no relief from the hot and humid weather prevailing in the city. The power cuts and erratic water supply had made the lives of people all the more miserable in some areas. The state government had announced change of school timings to protect school going children from the adverse effect of the scorching heat wave conditions. Official sources said that immediately after the spell of showers mercury level witnessed a downfall of 8 degree Celsius. The maximum day temperature was hovering above 40 degree Celsius since last week. Sources in Met department said that the day temperature was recorded at 28.7 degree Celsius while it was 39 degree Celsius yesterday. The temperature had touched up to 42.7 degree Celsius in the past couple of days forcing the commuters to use face masks and other protection mechanism to save their skin from sun burns. However, people of the city were seen enjoying in the rain today. Drivers on the city roads were having fun in the rain by parking their cars aside. Young children came out on the streets of their colonies to enjoy the showers. The immediate fall out of the brief spell of showers coupled with high speed wind was felt across the region. Majority of population suffering ill effects of scorching heat wave conditions also heaved a sigh of relief. Weathermen have predicted that pleasant weather conditions would persist for next 24-48 hours after which mercury would once again start rising and heat wave conditions would be intensified. "We are expecting more rainfall in entire Jammu and Kashmir because of western disturbance," they said, adding "While the rains have brought relief to the people from scorching heat, it created problems for the farmers since they were busy in harvesting of wheat crop."
