| Cold waves grip Valley | | | Early times Report Srinagar, Apr 22 : Fresh snowfall on upper reaches and rains in the plains has intensified the cold wave conditions in the Kashmir valley, with the minimum temperature recording below normal for the first time during the past two months. After witnessing hot weather conditions for nearly three months (February, March and first fortnight of April), the coolness was back in the weather yesterday. ''Fresh snowfall was recorded on the upper reaches while in plains intermittent rains continued during the past 24 hours. Lowering the mercury to 7.8 degrees, 0.2 degree below normal,'' the weatherman said. Till yesterday, the minimum and maximum temperatures were above normal and people were wearing warm clothes in the city, but now woolen clothes are out. Kargil, in Ladakh region, was recorded the coldest in the Kashmir division with the minimum pegged at one degree followed by Leh three degrees. In the Kashmir valley, Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave, was the coldest with minimum recording at 4.6 degrees followed by kokernag at 6.4 degrees Kupwara 7.5 degrees and Qazigund 7.9 degrees this morning. According to the Met Office, there could be more rains in the region during the next 24 hours. Though the water level in the major rivers, including Jhelum and Sindh has increased during the past two days, there was no immediate threat of flood.
