Academy hosts Pak born Canadian poet, organizes interaction on Urdu

Srinagar, Apr 22: In a face to face interaction at Academy headquarters present position of Urdu language and literature were thoroughly discussed on Thursday. Function was organised to facilitate eminent Urdu writer, poet and broadcaster Ashfaq Hussain.
The writer-poet, who was born in Pakistan has settled in Canada and has been instrumental in popularising Urdu in that part of the world. The function was presided over by former Vice Chancellor Kashmir University and noted academic Prof. Hamidi Kashmiri while former Director Doordarshan, Farooq Nazki was the guest of honour. Pakistan born Canadian poet is on tour of India and is in Kashmir to observe the literary trends. "I have come to see as to what kind of trends are in vogue in places like Kashmir in so far as Urdu as a language is concerned," Ashfaq said. Responding to audience queries while participating in an interactive session, Ashfaq Hussain said that Urdu was a prominent language in the countries of the West also.
"In places like America, Canada, Middle East and Germany Urdu is a popular language of discourse," he said. Laying stress on patronising Urdu at regional levels, he said since the roots of Urdu were in the sub continent, the language must be promoted in the sub continent itself.
"It is our language and we all must work collectively to develop and promote it," the Canadian poet said. Prominent among those who participated in the question-answer session included Director Radio Kashmir Srinagar, Rafiq Raaz, noted poetess, Rukhsana Jabeen, Mushtaque Ahmad Ali Khan, Prof. Syed Raza, Dr. Ashraf Asari and Dr. Riyaz Towheed among others. Before the formal question-answer session could begin, Ashfaq Hussain read out abstracts from some of his own poems. Earlier presenting the welcome address, Chief Editor, Urdu, Mohammed Ashraf Tak said that as far as Urdu was concerned, Kashmir had emerged as a stronghold. "Urdu is very popular in Kashmir and is now being spoken in almost every household," Tak said.Speaking on the occasion, the guest of honour, Farooq Nazki congratulated the Cultural Academy for organising such programmes. "This is good on part of Academy because it is through such interactions that we are able to know the status of Urdu at the international level," Nazki said. In his presidential address, Prof. Hamidi Kashmiri said that those who were worried that Urdu was dying should stop fretting over its future. "Urdu is alive and would remain so because many new centres of Urdu have sprung up across the world," he said.
