| State employees likely to get some sops soon | | | early times report Jammu, Apr 22: Keeping up its promises made to the employees, the National Conference led Government has finally decided in principle to release another DA instalment in favour of the employees and enhance the House Rent Allowance besides converting the existing COLA into DA. The cabinet will take final decision on the sops as had been agreed between the employees and the cabinet subcommittee. Official sources said that these concessions were part of the sops the Government wanted to keep up with the employees,who had gone on 12-day strike, in good humour. It also has plans of raising the move allowance by Rs.1,000. As far as the question of releasing 6th pay commission arrears, the state Government is in touch with the central Government. Official sources said once Delhi gave some assurance, the arear s may be released in installments. Meanwhile, the employee leaders have decided to knock the doors of the Supreme Court against the State High Court verdict describing the employees strike as illegal and unjustified. Leaders of the employees unions hope that the Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, will fulfill his commitment he had made while persuading the secretariat employees to call off their agitation. The leaders said that though "we have decided not to go on strike again but this decision can be temporary." They said the struggle will continue and the Government should not misconstrue "our" decision not to go on strike as "our" weakness. They said "we want to give the Government sufficient time for fulfilling its commitment to the employees because we are aware of certain problems the Government faced." Official sources said that the Government expected full cooperation from the employees so that the recovery of tax, power tariff, customs arrears increased. The sources said that during the last one year the tax recovery figures have gone up but more was needed to be done to help the Government in improving internal resources. The sources,while referring to criticism from various quarters over reckless spending by the Government,said that during the last over one year the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather,has imposed strict restrictions on wasteful expenses.They said the Finance Minister has laid down guidelines which have been instrumental for achieving austerity measures.The sources said that as a result of austerity measures the Government saved about Rs.100 crores last year.
