Army chief visits forward posts; briefs Guv, CM on security situation

JAMMU, Apr 22: On last day of this three-day visit to the state, army chief, General V K Singh today reviewed the security situation in forward areas of Poonch and later called on governor N N Vohra and chief minister Omar Abdullah here.
During his meetings with Vohra and Omar, he was accompanied by GOC-in-C northern command, Lt Gen B S Jaswal. Gen Singh briefed both of them about the overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and about the reviews done by him during his 3-day visit to the state.
Vohra and Gen Singh also discussed various issues related to the recent pattern of infiltrations from across the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) and the likely effect thereof on the state's security situation in the coming months.
The governor also presented a memento to the army chief. His meeting with the chief minister lasted half an hour. This was his first meeting with Vohra and Omar after taking over as army chief.
Earlier, accompanied by GOC-in-C northern command, Lt Gen B S Jaswal amd White Knight Corps GOC, he visited Nagrota corps and forward posts on the LoC in Poonch and Mendhar.
He was briefed by GOC, Ace of Spade Division, on the latest situation in the area.
Army sources said Gen Singh reviewed the security situation in the area and was satisfied with the state of readiness to counter the infiltration threat and crush terrorism. He lauded army efforts in improving the quality of life of locals through sadbhavna projects.Interacting with the troops at forward posts, he appreciated their courage, dedication and their efforts in keeping the menace of terrorism under check.
He mentioned that the morale of the terrorists was at its lowest ebb due to successful operations carried out by the army in last few months. He exhorted the troops to continue with the state of high vigil on the LoC and also neutralize the nefarious designs of terrorists both along the LoC and in the hinterland.
Gen Singh's wife and president of central family welfare organisation, Bharti Singh visited the Akhnoor military station. She was accompanied by Ritu Jaswal, president, Family Welfare Organisation (FWO), northern command and Luxmi Roy, president Family Welfare Organisation, White Knight Corps. Sources said she interacted with the wives of JCOs and jawans of the station. She was also briefed about the various activities being undertaken to improve the quality of life of the families of troops as a welfare measure in order to maintain the high standard of morale of the troops of the White Knight Corps.
