| Terrorists can use Biological weapons: DIG | | 'Pak- B'desh working on Biological Warfare Programme' | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Apr 22: India has great threat of biological attack as its neighboring countries especially Pakistan and Bangladesh are probably working on Biological Warfare Programme (BWP). This was stated by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Poonch Rajouri range, SD Singh Jamwal while delivering a lecture on "Bioterrorism-Issues, Time of Perception and Preparedness" at Centre for Biodiversity Studies of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University on the eve of World Earth Day today. The Police officer further said "Terrorists can use Biological weapons against India and these weapons are dangerous for whole nation." "In the backdrop of hostile relationship with neighbouring countries, India has been facing great threat of biological attack from these countries. It cannot be ruled out that these countries are working on Biological Warfare Programme," he said, adding that though India is well aware how to combat the attack still there is lot of need to improve the technology for combating this dangerous attack from enemy. "Terrorists can depute suicide squads of virus infected people in India; they can use rats for communicating any pathogen to this land," the DIG averred. Attended by Minister for Agriculture, GH Mir, Vice Chancellor BGSBU Masud A Choudhary, Registrar MR Choudhary, Dean Prof AK Koul, expert scientists of Jammu University, BGSBU University, students, staff and researchers, the DIG maintained that Biological weapons were also used in ancient and medieval period but the present situation is far different from the past. "In the era of global terrorism, this weapon can be used as a tool by the militants. In 2002, Al-Qaida had threatened America that they were going to use biological weapon against it. In India similar threat was given by Tamil militants in 1987 so the threat of biological warfare is increasing with every passing day," he asserted and added that Al-Qaida has already established links with four militant outfits operating against India. The DIG said that while western world is well advanced to tackle any such situation, India despite having preventive machinery, need to do lot in this area. "We must focus on this area otherwise it can be a big problem in future." Citing example, the police officer said that if militants use this weapon in financial capital of India i.e Mumbai, it would de-track whole India. Minister for Agriculture, GH Mir highly appreciated the effort of DIG for presenting an important lecture. Meanwhile, the BGSB University celebrated Earth Day and started a series of programmes in regard of International Biodiversity Year-2010. Minister of Agriculture has appreciated the role of University in creating awareness about the biodiversity conservation and suggested to work on building of positive approach among the students. "People who are using biological weapons are educated and intelligent and there is need to develop positive approach among the students in order to combat bad tendency of the education," he added. Earlier Vice Chancellor welcomed minister and elaborated his future plans regarding conservation of biodiversity.
