Uri dares Geelani to face election
NC vs Geelani again
4/23/2010 12:18:11 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 22: It is National Conference versus separatists once again, this time, the two stalwarts from the opposite political camps locking horns in statements loaded with venomous accusations. Ruling National Conference today came out with a hitting statement against hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani to counter what the latter uttered against the party and its founder late Shiekh Mohammad Abdullah.
The counter accusation has interestingly come from Mohammad Shafi Uri, party MP who has been seen in sorts of hibernation for quite some time, though known for his articulate skills and political bashing against the rivals. Responding to the statement made by Geelani at Chankipora, Sopore while mourning the death of Zubair Ahmad, Mohammad Shafi said Geelani's 'venomous outburst' against the first family of Jammu & Kashmir and National Conference was uncalled for and most inappropriate. Without naming any party, Uri advised him to refrain from becoming a mouthpiece of his sympathizers in the mainstream politics.
Coming down heavily against Geelani ,Shafi said when Geelani could not cut ice with all his endeavors in the mainstream politics in Jammu & Kashmir, he suddenly donned on himself an Avatar of a separatist leader and started espousing the cause which was no way near him till 1987. "The man who swore by the Indian constitution and the constitution of J&K till 1987 suddenly found all wrong about the mainstream polity of J&K", said Shafi.
"Geelani has many questions to answer before he throws mud at others……..his political theory has only brought misery and sufferings to the people of the state and caused huge economic and human loss to the people of Jammu & Kashmir and even today when the state is moving on the path of normalcy", the NC leader said accusing that Geelani is using his divisive designs to create uncertainty and sabotaging the peace initiatives being taken.
Shafi also held Geelani responsible for sabotaging peace initiatives taken by India and Pakistan. He said National Conference's endeavor to find a lasting solution to the Kashmir imbroglio which is acceptable to the people of Kashmir with active participation of India and Pakistan does not suit Geelani and his politics as his politics germinates only in disorder and chaos.
Shafi challenged Geelani to come up and face an election and test his political support in the valley and see for himself how many people in J&K support him and his ideology of blood shed and killing. He said the politics of graveyards has never helped any society and one individual cannot hold the people of Jammu & Kashmir to ransom and take them to the path of violence and destruction. " National Conference always opposed politics of bloodshed and shall continue to do so in the larger interest of people of Jammu & Kashmir who have always suffered because of machinations of people like Geelani….", the senior party leader said, supporting and defending the policies of his party.
Shafi Uri also chose to remind Syed Ali Shah Geelani of his political past in the mainstream politics, contending that when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was leading the struggle of Kashmiris, Geelani chose to fight parliamentary elections in 1971.
Ridiculing what he alleged the prejudice of Geelani against the National Conference and its leadership, Mohammad Shafi said that history bears testimony to the active role Geelani played in mainstream politics from 1972 to 1987 during which he fought four assembly elections and also became a member of the J&K State Legislative Assembly.
"History will always remember Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah as one of the tallest leaders of the sub-continent and the tallest personality of Kashmir. Sheikh Sahib's stature and contribution to Kashmir needs no certificate from pygmies like Geelani ," he said adding that it was most unfortunate that Geelani has chosen to launch a dia-tribe against the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah just to get 'cheap popularity'.
Mohammad Shafi said that the public memory is not so short that they will forget the period when Sheikh Sahib and his colleagues were struggling against the oppressors and facing imprisonment and highhandedness, Geelani and his cohorts were hobnobbing with the government high-ups and making hay.
