EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, Apr 23: Government of Punjab has decided to celebrate 300 years victory day of Sirhand in J&K’s border district Rajouri-the birth place of conquer of Sirhind -Banda Singh Bahadur.

Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal is likely to kick off celebrations from Rajouri on May 11 from where a procession is likely to march towards Sirhind and a grand function will be held on May 13 in Punjab.

Disclosing the Punjab governments’ decision, Minister for Agriculture, Government of Punjab, Sucha Singh told Early Times at Rajouri that they are going to start “300 Saal Sirhind Fateh Diwas” from the place where Banda Singh Bahadur was born in 1670.

He said that on behalf of the Punjab government, he visited here to review the arrangements. “We have chosen the actual birth place of Banda Singh Bahadur in Rajouri”, Sucha Singh said, adding that Chief Minister of Punjab is expected to kick off celebrations from Rajouri on May 13. The minister was accompanied by T. S Wazir, Member Legislative Council of J&K.

During the visit of minister, he finalized the programme. “A procession of Sikh community will march from here towards Sirhind and after reaching Sirhind on May 13, a grand function will be held here,” he said, adding Banda Singh Bahadur was great warrior of Sikhs who fought against Mughals and got the Sirhind freed from their occupation.

The programme at Rajouri will be arranged by Nirman Singh, President Gurduwara Prabandhak Committee Rajouri.

Talking to Early Times, Nirman Singh said that besides Punjab CM, the programme on May 11 is expected to be attended by All India Sikh Gurudawara Prabandhak Committee Amritsar Chief Avtar Singh Makhar. “This will a great programme in the history of Rajouri”, he added.

Banda Singh Bahadur is considered one of the greatest and most hallowed warriors and martyrs of the Sikhs. He becomes a Sikh warrior known for his struggle against the Mughal Empire in the early eighteenth century after meeting with Sri Guru Gobind Singh. He became a warrior against the Mughal Empire and Guru Gobind Singh gave him the new name of Banda Singh Bahadur.

Famous for the sack of the Mughal provincial capital, Sirhind, he is revered as one of the most hallowed martyrs of the Khalsa. His confrontation with the Mughal administration in Northern India, though brief, was strong enough to shake its foundations. The agrarian uprising that he led in the Punjab was the foundation on which the Dal Khalsa, the Sikh Misls and Maharaja Ranjit Singh built the edifice which finally culminated with Ranjit Singh capturing Lahore in 1799 and establishing the Sikh Kingdom of the Punjab.

One of the most revolutionary acts of Banda Bahadur, after establishing his authority in Punjab, was the abolition of the zamindari system, and granting proprietary rights to the actual tillers of the land.

As the government of Punjab is celebrating 300 years of Victory day of Sirhind, it was on May 12, 1710 at Chhappar Chiri when Banda Bahadur defeated Mughals. Sirhind was the economic and provincial capital of Mughals.
