| Cabinet nod to Rs 473 cr energy plan for Ladakh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, Apr 23: The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure has given its nod to a project to promote use of renewable energy by harnessing natural resources in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 473 crore. This would entirely be met by the Centre. A Government Press note issued here today says that the plan envisages 30 small or micro-hydroelectric projects aggregating in generation of to 23.5 MW power, setting up of about 300 Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) power plants of 5-100 KW capacity, 2000 SPV home lighting systems and about 40,000 solar thermal systems such as water heating, solar cookers, solar passive buildings and solar greenhouse etc. The last of them proposed to be set up in the region would help in increasing the production of green vegetables in winters for the region, which as of now are procured from far off places. The implementation of the plan will start from June, 2010 and will be completed by December, 2013. The renewable energy projects are expected to result in a saving of about 200 lakh litres of diesel every year. The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah along with senior officials form his Ministry, will be visiting Jammu and Kashmir next month to hold discussions with the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for speedy implementation of the plan. The region facing extreme environment conditions and sub-zero temperatures in winter season nevertheless has good potential of solar and hydro resources for electricity generation. Yet much of this is to be realised to minimise the use of diesel, kerosene and fuel-wood. Thus, detailed studies were undertaken in Leh and Kargil districts of the region and after consultations with all the stakeholders, including defence officials, Ladakh Councils in Leh and Kargil, districts officials and NGOs, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy prepared a Plan for large scale use of renewable energy with a total financial requirement of Rs 473 crore. Now this has been approved by the Union Cabinet, says the Government Press note. The time limit for the implementation of plan is three-and-a-half-year after work commences on this from the month of June, says the Press note.
