| 12,000 PG Seats in Govt Medical Colleges Coming | | | AGENCIES
BANGALORE, Apr 24: The Union Health and Family Welfare Minster Ghulam Nabi Azad today said 12,000 additional post graduate seats in government-run medical colleges in the country would be introduced in the next three years. "The health ministry would sanction 4,000 additional PG seats in government-run medical colleges this year and a similar number each in the next two years," Azad said while inaugurating 1,400-bed Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Centre here.
Stressing on the need to boost manpower in the health care sector, the minister said the government would sanction 270 nursing schools that would produce additional 20,000 trained personnel every year.
He, however, did not give any time frame. The health ministry will spend Rs 2,000 crore on programmes of non-communicable diseases, including about Rs 731 crore for cancer control programme in the next two years, Azad said.
"We are also in the process of establishing OncoNET India Project, a network connecting 27 regional cancer centres and 100 peripheral centres, thus, facilitating tele-medicine services and continued medical education," he said.
The Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Centre, claimed to be the world's largest cancer hospital, was established by speciality cardiac care hospital Narayana Hrudayalaya in collaboration with biotech firm Biocon
