Mercury down, Infiltration up
10/15/2006 9:41:50 PM

Jammu, October 15 : Each year before the winter sets in, attempts of infiltration witness a marked increase .And this year too, as per the trend, sudden change in the weather conditions has necessitated that security forces deployed across the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir be put on high alert to check fresh attempts of infiltration.
Apart from this, reports suggest that launching pads across the line of control are also witnessing hectic activity and in the first fortnight during October infiltrators had already made their presence felt by trying to cross Line of control in Gurez and Poonch sector.
Experts said, every year infiltrators push in larger number of militants before winter sets in as the infiltration routes get blocked due to heavy snowfall in the upper reaches.Compared to thickly vegetated stretch of line of control in jammu, infiltration bids are reported more in densely forest areas in Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu and Gurez ,Uri, Kupwara in Kashmir.
A senior police officer of the rank of DIG said today that during the last one month series of infiltration bids were made by groups of militants from across Gurez,Kupwara, Poonch and Rajouri and more than 15 infiltrators had been killed since the last week of September. He said no attempts were however made in the Chamb sector.
Senior functionaries of security agencies said that during the last over one year not a single infiltration bid was made by militants from across the Chamb sector.
They said that three factors were responsible for.
First, the Indian troops occupy vantage position with their posts set up on high reaches which has enabled the border guards to monitor the movement of militants across the border.
About 200 members of the Village Defence committees have been supplementing the anti-infiltration exercise of the Army. And thirdly, the Chamb sector is vegetative but does not have as much a thick forest cover as one finds in the border belt of Poonch and Rajouri. This has made the task of monitoring the movement of militants easy. A senior police officer said that local support to militants in the area has been absent.
Explaining the reason behind marginal increase in the level of ingress and violence the police said that agencies across the border have directed militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir to kick up violence so that the Kashmir issue remained in the focus during international conferences.
