| MIET celebrates Earth Day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 24: Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) in association with the Times Group celebrated Earth Day here today. Minister for Industries and Commerce Surjit Singh Slathia was the Chief Guest on the occasion while KK Sharma, Director Floriculture and KN Padha, Chairman, Van Sampada were the Guests of Honour. Pradeep Dutta, Bureau Chief, Times Now Channel was the special guest on the occasion. The event comprised talks by the panelists, a project display of electrical and electronics projects pertaining to environmental issues and a plantation drive supported by the Directorate of Floriculture. Speaking on the occasion, SS Slathia stressed the need for an attitudinal change amongst the common people. The environmental issue impacts all and should not be considered the problem of someone else. He felt that every small step in this matter will have a cascading effect and make a difference. Maj Gen. (Retd) Prof SK Sharma, Principal, MIET in his address stressed the need for assuming individual responsibility regarding our planet and our environment by adopting an action-oriented approach. He apprised the audience regarding the various initiatives regarding the environment taken at MIET which demonstrated the commitment of the management, staff and students of the institute towards these pertinent issues. Addressing the gathering NK Padha, Chairman, Van Sampada described the evolution of mankind and its dependence on mother Earth from the initial sustenance to the current over exploitation of natural resources. KK Sharma, Director Floriculture explained how in Jammu the cash crops, medicinal herbs/plants and water bodies have disappeared over the years due to illegal encroachments causing sever crisis. The two remedial measures he suggested were plantation of trees and plants which require less water and rain water harvesting.Pradeep Dutta, exhorted on the audience not to forget the importance of the message once they left the seminar, but to develop a conscience effort towards the environment and act accordingly. He made a brilliant suggestion of giving plants as birthday presents instead of flowers which wilt away in some time. Dr Ankur Gupta, Joint Director MIET presented the vote of thanks and promised the guests that MIET shall always continue to do its bit for environmental issues.Later a project exhibition with projects having an environmental impact, were displayed by the final year students of Electronics and Electrical Engineering. Projects such as intelligent electricity manager, smart water pump, remote control for all appliances, solar electricity generator with sensors and microcontrollers were showcased and greatly appreciated by the guests. Over 100 trees were planted by the dignitaries and the students to conclude the event.
