| Exhibition of rare books, manuscripts concludes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 25: Three days exhibition of rare books and manuscripts organized by Department of Libraries & Research in collaboration with the Department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums at Kala Kendra here came to a close today. The exhibition proved a huge draw with people from all walks of life seizing the opportunity of coming face to face with the rich cultural, historical and literary heritage of Jammu & Kashmir. Originally scheduled to be a one-day event as part of the celebrations of the World Book Day, the exhibition was extended by two days on public demand following its inauguration by the Minister for Tourism & Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora on Friday. Minister of State for Tourism, Culture, Housing & Urban Development, Nasir Aslam Wani was present on the occasion. A unique collection of old and rare books and manuscripts in various languages like Sanskrit, Sharda, Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Punjabi and English was on display. Besides, several historic photo albums were also put on view. "A large number of people, young and old, including students, university and college teachers, scholars, writers and lovers of books visited the exhibition during the past three days", said Khalid Bashir Ahmad, Director Libraries & Research who holds additional charge of the Department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums. "We are encouraged by the overwhelming response by the people and this experience will help us in planning more such events in future for generating awareness about books", he added. The visitors highly appreciated the holding of the exhibition and majority of them suggested that such events should be held periodically to create awareness and showcase the rich heritage of the State. If the Visitors' Book was any indication, the exhibition was a huge success. Khalid Bashir Ahmad thanked his staff, especially Deputy Director Archives, Archaeology & Museums, Peerzada Mohammad Ashraf and Deputy Director, Libraries, Rajinder Singh for their tireless efforts to put up a good show. An exhibition of rare books and manuscripts was also held at SPS Library, Srinagar on April 23, to commemorate the World Book Day.
